  • Sometimes called core aeration, lawn aeration is the process of creating small holes in your lawn to improve its overall health. To “aerate” means to add air or improve ventilation, which helps the soil breathe. This is typically done either by pushing solid spikes into the ground or by “coring,” which removes small plugs of soil. Core aeration usually pulls out plugs about ¼ to ¾ inch wide and 2 to 3 inches deep, allowing air, water, and nutrients to reach the roots more effectively.

  • People aerate their lawn for several important reasons. Over time, soil becomes compacted, which makes it difficult for roots to grow and thrive. Aeration loosens this tight soil, allowing the root system to expand more easily. It also improves water absorption, so moisture can reach deeper into the ground instead of running off the surface. By creating space in the soil, aeration increases oxygen flow, helping roots “breathe” and promoting overall lawn health. In addition, it helps break down thatch buildup and allows fertilizers and nutrients to penetrate the soil more effectively, reaching the roots where they’re needed most.

  • Once the aeration process is completed, the lawn will look messy because all the ‘blocks’ or ‘plugs’ pulled up by the power aeration machine will be left behind on top of the grass. It will be hard, but leave them there. They will break up and return to the lawn and act as nutrients. After a  week or two has gone by, it will be time to mow the grass again and the left behind ‘cores’ will begin to blend into the grass and soil.
